A $30 Polaris Fix That Another Company Quoted at $1,200

The Polaris stopped climbing walls. Another company quoted $1,200 for a new booster pump and cleaner. We replaced a cracked wall fitting for $30. The cleaner worked perfectly.

A Frisco homeowner called us after getting a $1,200 repair quote from another company. Their Polaris pool cleaner had stopped climbing the walls and was sitting on the pool floor spinning in circles. The other company diagnosed it as a failed booster pump ($600) and a worn-out Polaris cleaner that needed full replacement ($600). Total: $1,200.

We looked at it for 5 minutes. The Polaris wall attachment fitting — a small plastic piece that connects the cleaner hose to the wall return — was cracked. Water pressure was leaking out at the fitting instead of driving the cleaner. We replaced the fitting. Cost: $30 in parts. The Polaris immediately started climbing walls and working normally.

The booster pump was fine. The cleaner was fine. A $30 plastic fitting was the entire problem. Here is how overquoting happens, how to protect yourself, and what that $1,200 quote tells you about the company that gave it.

What Actually Happened

The Polaris System (How It Works)

A Polaris pressure-side cleaner (280, 380, or 3900 Sport) connects to a dedicated return line in the pool wall. A booster pump on the equipment pad pushes high-pressure water through that return line, through the wall fitting, through the hose, and into the cleaner. The water pressure drives the cleaner's wheels and vacuum jet, propelling it across the floor and up the walls.

The system has four components:

  1. Booster pump (on the equipment pad)
  2. Supply line (pipe from booster pump to pool wall)
  3. Wall fitting (the connection point inside the pool wall where the hose attaches)
  4. The Polaris cleaner itself (hose + head + bag)

Where It Failed

The wall fitting is a plastic connector embedded in the pool wall — it has a threaded port that the Polaris hose screws into. Over time, UV exposure (in pools with the fitting above or near the waterline), chemical exposure, and repeated hose connections/disconnections weaken the plastic. The fitting develops a crack.

When the fitting cracks, pressurized water from the booster pump leaks out through the crack instead of going through the hose to the cleaner. The cleaner receives reduced pressure — not enough to drive it up walls or maintain suction. It sits on the floor, spinning weakly or not moving at all.

What the Other Company Said

The other company saw a Polaris cleaner not working and heard the booster pump running. They did not trace the pressure path from the pump through the wall fitting to the cleaner. They jumped to the two most expensive components — "your booster pump is weak" and "your cleaner is worn out" — and quoted replacement of both.

They either did not diagnose properly or they diagnosed correctly and upsold intentionally. Either way, the homeowner was about to pay $1,200 for a $30 problem.

What We Did

Step 1: Checked booster pump output. We disconnected the Polaris hose from the wall fitting and turned on the booster pump. Water blasted out of the wall fitting at full pressure. The booster pump was fine — strong flow, no unusual noise, no leaks.

Step 2: Checked the wall fitting. With the booster pump running, we looked at the wall fitting closely. Water was spraying from a hairline crack in the plastic housing. Pressure was leaking before it ever reached the hose.

Step 3: Replaced the fitting. We turned off the pump, unscrewed the old fitting, applied Teflon tape to the new one, and screwed it in. Total time: 10 minutes. Part cost: $30.

Step 4: Reconnected and tested. Polaris hose connected to the new fitting. Booster pump on. Cleaner immediately started moving with full pressure — climbing walls, vacuuming, and working exactly as designed.

How Overquoting Happens

The "Replace Everything" Approach

Some companies diagnose by replacement — if something is not working, quote to replace the entire assembly. If the Polaris is not moving, replace the pump and the cleaner. If the heater does not ignite, replace the heater. If the pool is green, replaster the pool.

This approach is profitable for the company. It eliminates diagnostic effort (why spend 15 minutes finding the actual problem when you can quote $1,200 in 2 minutes?). And it guarantees the problem is solved — if you replace everything, the faulty part is definitely included somewhere.

But it costs the homeowner 10-40x more than necessary. The faulty part is a $30 fitting. The other $1,170 worth of parts being replaced are working fine.

The Knowledge Gap

Some technicians genuinely do not know how to diagnose pressure-side cleaner systems. They know the Polaris is not working. They know it connects to a booster pump. They do not know how to trace pressure from the pump through the wall fitting to the cleaner and identify where the pressure is being lost. So they default to the safe recommendation: replace everything.

This is not malice — it is incompetence. The result is the same for the homeowner — a $1,200 bill for a $30 problem — but the motivation is different. Either way, it is a failure of the service company.

The Commission Structure

Some larger pool companies pay technicians on commission for repair quotes. The technician earns more by quoting a $1,200 repair than by fixing a $30 fitting. This creates a direct incentive to overquote — the technician's paycheck increases with the size of the repair ticket.

Ask your pool service: "How are your technicians compensated for repairs?" If the answer involves commission or bonuses tied to repair revenue, your repair quotes may be inflated.

How to Protect Yourself

Get a Diagnosis, Not Just a Quote

When something breaks, ask your pool service (or the company giving you a repair quote): "What specifically failed? Show me the failed part and explain why it failed." A company that diagnoses properly can point to the specific failure — "this fitting is cracked, water is leaking here, the rest of the system is fine."

A company that cannot point to a specific failure and instead says "the whole system needs replacement" has either not diagnosed properly or is overquoting.

Get a Second Opinion for Quotes Over $500

Any repair quote above $500 deserves a second opinion. Call another pool service company and ask them to diagnose the same problem independently — without telling them what the first company quoted. Compare the diagnoses. If Company A says "replace the pump and cleaner — $1,200" and Company B says "replace the wall fitting — $30" — you have your answer.
