How a Pool Goes Green in One Day

People assume a green pool means weeks of neglect. It doesn't. After a storm, a well-maintained pool can turn green almost overnight, and it comes down to a chain reaction:

1. The storm dumps organic debris. Wind and rain blow leaves, dirt, pollen, and yard debris into the pool. All of that organic material consumes chlorine as it breaks down — fast.

2. The skimmer chokes. Here's the part most people miss. All those leaves get pulled toward the skimmer and clog it. On this pool, the skimmer (the "faucet" intake) got completely choked with leaves. Once the skimmer is blocked, water stops circulating properly.

3. Circulation stops, chlorine crashes. With the skimmer clogged and circulation cut, the pump can't move water through the filter, and chlorine can't distribute. Meanwhile the storm debris is eating whatever chlorine is left. Within hours, the pool has no sanitizer and no circulation.
