One Suction Leak Burned Out Two Pumps and Sprung Leaks in Every Joint — And We Found Kids' Goggles in the Plumbing

One suction leak, ignored, burned out the booster and main pump, sprung leaks at nearly every joint, and left kids' goggles lodged in the plumbing. Our priciest repair this summer.

The most expensive repair we did this summer in Frisco started as one suction leak. By the time it was caught, that single leak had burned out both the booster pump and the main pump, sprung leaks at nearly every plumbing joint on the system, and — when we opened the lines up — we found a pair of kids' swim goggles lodged in the plumbing. One small leak, ignored, cascaded into a repair that touched the entire equipment system.

What a Suction Leak Actually Is

Pool plumbing has two sides. The suction side is everything before the pump — the pipes pulling water from the pool toward the pump (skimmer lines, main drain). The pressure side is everything after the pump, pushing water back to the pool through the filter.

A suction-side leak is uniquely dangerous because of what leaks in, not out. On the pressure side, a leak sprays water — you see it, you find it. On the suction side, the pipe is under vacuum, so instead of spraying water out, it sucks air in. That air is invisible until it's deep inside your equipment causing damage.

How One Leak Destroyed Two Pumps

Here's the chain reaction air on the suction side sets off:

Air enters the pump. A suction leak feeds a steady stream of air into the pump instead of solid water. You can often see it as bubbles in the pump strainer basket.

The pump runs dry and overheats. Pumps are water-cooled and water-lubricated. Air isn't. When a pump is pulling air instead of a solid column of water, it runs hot and the internal seals lose their lubrication. Run it that way long enough and the shaft seal fails and the motor burns out.

Both pumps go. On this pool there was a booster pump (for the pressure-side cleaner) as well as the main pump. The suction leak starved the system, and both pumps burned out — not one, both.

Every joint starts leaking. This is the part people underestimate. When a system runs under abnormal pressure and vacuum conditions from a leak — pumps cavitating, pressure spiking and dropping, air hammering through the lines — the stress finds every weak point. Old glued joints that were holding fine under normal conditions start weeping and failing. By the end, nearly every plumbing joint on this system had sprung a leak, because the whole system had been running under stress for who knows how long.

The Goggles in the Plumbing

When we opened up the lines to trace and repair everything, we found a pair of kids' swim goggles lodged inside the plumbing. They'd been sucked into a skimmer or drain, worked their way into the pipe, and were sitting there restricting flow — contributing to the whole mess by further choking an already-struggling system.

This is more common than people think. Small items — goggles, toys, hair ties, dive sticks — get pulled into skimmers and main drains and lodge in the plumbing. Most of the time they cause a partial blockage that quietly makes everything work harder. Combined with a suction leak, it's a compounding problem: less water getting through, more air getting in, pumps working harder and hotter.

Why This Got So Expensive

This is the textbook example of how a small problem becomes a big one when nobody catches it early. The individual pieces:

  • A suction leak — on its own, often a modest repair once located
  • Two burned-out pumps — booster and main, both needing replacement
  • Leaks at nearly every joint — extensive re-plumbing, not a single fix
  • A foreign object in the lines — adding to the blockage and the diagnosis time

Caught when it was just a suction leak — bubbles in the pump basket, a pump losing prime — this is a fraction of the cost. Left to run, the leak took the whole system down with it. That's the nature of suction leaks: they don't announce themselves with a puddle, so they run in the background destroying equipment until something finally dies loudly enough to get noticed.

Warning Signs of a Suction Leak

Catch it at this stage and you save yourself a system-wide repair:

  • Air bubbles in the pump strainer basket while the pump runs — the clearest sign
  • The pump losing prime or taking a long time to prime up
  • Low water flow returning to the pool
  • The pump running louder or hotter than normal
  • Water level dropping with no visible leak (some suction leaks pull from the surrounding ground)

If you see bubbles in your pump basket, don't wait. That's air getting in where only water should be, and every hour the pump runs like that is wear you don't get back.
