A Frisco homeowner left for a 3-week vacation in July without telling us they were leaving. The pool kept running on its timer. Texas heat evaporated a quarter inch of water per day. After 10 days, the water level dropped below the skimmer opening. The skimmer started sucking air instead of water. The pump ran dry for 3-4 days before we arrived for the next weekly visit.

How Water Level Drops Kill Pumps
The Evaporation Math
A standard 15,000-gallon Frisco pool loses 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water per day to evaporation during summer. That is 100-200 gallons daily. Over 3 weeks:

Most pool skimmers sit 4-6 inches below the deck. After 10-14 days of summer evaporation without refilling, the water level drops below the skimmer mouth. The skimmer starts pulling air instead of water.
What Happens When the Skimmer Sucks Air
Stage 1: Air enters the pump. The pump strainer fills with a mix of air and water. You can see the water level dropping inside the clear pump lid — half water, half air. The pump struggles but keeps running.
Stage 2: Pump loses prime. The air volume increases until the pump cannot maintain suction. The pump basket is mostly empty. The pump is spinning but moving almost no water.
Stage 3: Shaft seal overheats. The mechanical shaft seal at the front of the pump motor depends on water for lubrication and cooling. Without water flowing past it, the seal runs dry. Dry friction generates extreme heat — the seal temperature can exceed 300°F within minutes.
Stage 4: Seal cracks and fails. The overheated seal cracks. Water that does make it to the pump leaks past the failed seal and enters the motor housing. Moisture on the motor windings causes corrosion, short circuits, and eventual motor failure.
Timeline from air entry to seal failure: 2-5 days of continuous dry running. The pump timer keeps turning the pump on and off on schedule. Each cycle runs the pump dry for hours, accelerating the seal damage.
What the Pump Sounded Like
When we arrived for the weekly visit and turned on the pump to test it, it made a grinding, whining sound followed by a loud squeal. The motor shaft was barely turning. Water was dripping from the seal housing. The motor drew excessive amperage and tripped the breaker within 30 seconds.
Diagnosis: Shaft seal destroyed from dry running. Water intrusion into motor housing. Motor windings corroded. Pump was not repairable — full replacement required.
What You Should Do Before Any Vacation
Tell Your Pool Service You Are Leaving
This is the single most important thing — and the thing most homeowners forget. One text: "We're leaving July 5, back July 25. Please keep an eye on the water level."
When we know you are away, we:
- Check water level at every visit and fill using your hose if it drops
- Increase chlorine dose to account for no mid-week adjustments
- Monitor equipment more closely since nobody is home to notice problems
- Text you if something needs attention that we cannot handle (gate locked, hose not accessible, equipment failure)
Set Up Auto-Fill (If You Have One)
Some Frisco pools have an auto-fill device — a float valve connected to a water supply line that automatically adds water when the level drops. If you have one, verify it is working before you leave. Turn it on, watch the float operate, and confirm water flows when the level drops.
If you do not have an auto-fill, consider installing one. Cost: $150-300 installed. It prevents the exact scenario described above — permanently.
Top Off the Pool Before You Leave
Fill the pool to the top of the tile line — as high as possible without overflowing. This gives maximum buffer before evaporation drops the level to a critical point. An extra 2-3 inches of starting water buys 5-7 extra days before the skimmer loses water.
Reduce Pump Runtime
If you are going to be away for 2+ weeks and cannot guarantee water level maintenance, reduce the pump timer to 4-6 hours per day (running during the coolest hours — midnight to 6 AM). This reduces the hours the pump runs and therefore reduces the damage window if the water level does drop below the skimmer.
Tradeoff: Reduced pump runtime means less filtration. The pool may cloud slightly. But a cloudy pool that needs a 2-day recovery ($100) is better than a dead pump that needs replacement ($1,400).
Do NOT Turn the Pump Off Completely
Some homeowners think "I'll just turn the pump off for 3 weeks." This is worse than running it with low water. Zero circulation means zero chlorine distribution, zero filtration, and guaranteed algae bloom within 5-7 days in summer. You will come home to a solid green pool that costs $200-350 to recover plus the 2-3 weeks of service to get chemistry stable again.
The pump needs to run — just with a safety net for water level.
